Transfer Credit Policy
Transfer-Out Credit:
Maharishi International University uses a semester system with academic credits equal to standard semester credits.
Transfer-In Credit:
MIU will accept as transfer credit toward its bachelor’s degree programs credit earned at any college that is a member of the Higher Learning Commission or other comparable U.S. “regional” accrediting association, or at an international university of comparable accreditation, or at an international university that has been specifically approved by the Registrar.
Transfer credit is always evaluated on a course-by-course basis. Credits applied toward undergraduate major requirements usually depend upon comparable courses being offered at MIU, though credits earned at acceptable universities will generally be transferable as elective credits toward MIU degrees.
A minimum of 128 credits (semester hours) is required for students to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. This may include up to 90 transfer credits.
Undergraduate degree students can apply transfer credits to cover electives, some general education requirements, and up to half the course work in the major, for a maximum of 90 total credits. General transfer credits are accepted for courses completed with a grade of “C” or higher.
Total transfer credits accepted from other institutions are posted on the student’s MIU transcript. Grades earned at other institutions are not included in calculating a student’s MIU grade point average. MIU converts transfer credit from quarter-hour institutions using the formula 1 quarter hour equals ⅔ of 1 semester hour.
- Students apply to their graduation advisor for evaluation of transfer credit.
- Transfer credit may be applied to the distribution requirement.
- Transfer credit may be applied to fulfill the writing requirements and the mathematics distribution requirement.
- Transfer students must apply for a transfer credit evaluation before the end of their first semester.
Mathematics requirements: Students whose transcripts on entry to MIU contain a mathematics course at the level of 100 or above, with a grade of C or above and taught by a mathematics department at an accredited university or college, are deemed to have satisfied MIU’s distribution requirement in mathematics. However, transfer credit for mathematics courses equivalent to Math 051, 152, 153, 161, 162, 281, or 282 does NOT satisfy mathematics requirements of those majors that require mathematics, and also CANNOT be applied to satisfy the prerequisite requirements for any course that has a mathematics prerequisite. For major and prerequisite mathematics requirements, the knowledge must be shown to be current on MIU’s Mathematics Placement Test.
