It incorporates all aspects of mind, body, behavior, and environment in a scientific framework.

Professor Paul Morehead with studentOur program integrates modern medicine and science with the natural approach of Ayurveda — and teaches you how to use them together to create optimal health.

In the BA program, you’ll learn the basics of a range of natural therapeutic techniques, including:

  • Optimal diet and routine for different individuals
  • Beneficial herbal supplements for specific imbalances and organ systems
  • Traditional purification therapies
  • Principles of biological rhythms and their effects on health

Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis

You’ll be trained extensively in the art of Maharishi AyurVeda Pulse Diagnosis. Taking the pulse enlivens the connection between mind and body, consciousness, and matter. Furthermore, the procedure of taking the pulse produces a balancing effect on the mind and body. You’ll learn how to read the pulse and detect imbalances early, before they manifest as symptoms of a disease; how to determine where imbalances are; and how to restore balance.

  • required courses for the Bachelor of Applied Arts & Sciences or any other bachelor’s degree program you choose
  • 32 additional credits of Ayurveda Wellness & Integrative Health courses

Courses for this specialization may include

This course presents the history and basic principles of aromatherapy, and its application in Maharishi AyurVeda. Topics include: the chemistry and therapeutic properties of aromatic molecules; detailed descriptions of the chemical structure and properties of essential oils and hydrosols, their therapeutic effects on physiological and emotional states, and their effect on the three doshas; and indications for common ailments. In this course students will learn how to select appropriate essential oils and hydrosols for well-being in accord with the principles of Maharishi AyurVeda Aromatherapy. Includes public speaking presentations and labs. Lab fee: $25; Materials fee: $15.
Yoga is one of the 40 aspects of the Veda and Vedic Literature representing the unifying quality of consciousness. According to Maharishi, Yoga provides technologies to unfold the experience of the unified level of consciousness or Transcendental Consciousness. The theoretical part of this unique course presents the knowledge of Yoga as unity and provides an understanding of the specific effects of Yoga Asanas on the mind and body, physiology, and consciousness. Proper practice of Yoga Asanas – another aspect of this course – provides students with the experience of deep relaxation, stress release, and expansion in the direction of unbounded pure consciousness. This course includes public speaking exercises on the effects of Yoga Asanas on specific mental and physical health conditions, and the readings of Maharishi’s commentaries to the Bhagavad-Gita as the essence of Vedic knowledge and the discipline of Yoga. Materials fee: $10 (4 credits)
This course is designed for students interested in holistic and complementary health, and the integration of traditional and modern health practices. This course introduces the principles of Maharishi AyurVeda Pulse Assessment Technique (Nadi Vigyan), and explores its relationship to physiological functions, immunity, and impediments to balance. Through a combination of lectures, applied practice, and group discussions, students learn how to use this technique to promote optimal health and well-being. Topics covered will include Ayurvedic anatomy and physiology, correlations to conventional sciences, and the use of this technique to identify the six stages of prevention (pathogenesis – Shat Kriya Kal).
This course delves into balancing the body’s internal ecosystem through the Ayurvedic perspective on diet, digestion, and nutrition (Agni Vigyan), linking consciousness to the principles and function of digestive system. Students learn about the importance of maintaining a balanced digestive fire (Agni) that supports individualized needs to enliven wellbeing. Topics will include the Ayurvedic understanding of the digestive process, assessment of digestive system balance and imbalances, their causes, and practical lifestyle and dietary recommendations for maintaining a healthy digestive system. The connection between digestive and other systems of the body is explored including how to address imbalances. By the end of this course, students have a comprehensive understanding of how to apply this knowledge in their own lives for optimal health and wellness.
This is the first course of a two-course series exploring the terminology, structure, function, and interdependence of the human body systems, as well as introducing relevant medical terminology. This course provides an understanding of how the body’s structure and function maintains balance and a healthy state. Topics include: homeostasis, feedback control, skeletal muscular system, blood, cardiovascular system, immune system, and digestive system. Relevant current scientific research results are discussed, as appropriate. Students will get an opportunity to explore how human physiology is a replica of natural law as expressed in the ancient Vedic Literature discovered by Tony Nader, MD, PhD. (4 credits)
What action in life is best for your personal development – your “Dharma”? How does this relate to family, social, and global responsibilities? How do we make the right decisions for ourselves and others, and act in a way that is enjoyable, not stressful and exhausting? This course studies timeless questions and dilemmas such as these, discussed in the Bhagavad-Gita — using as a guide Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s translation of and commentary on chapters one to six. (4 credits)
This course investigates the principles of Maharishi AyurVeda and the role of nature’s rhythms in promoting well-being. It explores how daily and seasonal rhythms affect an individual’s health, including the impact of daily routines, sleep patterns, exposure to natural light, and other environmental factors. Students learn about the Ayurvedic concept of daily routine (dinacharya) and seasonal routine (rituchariya) and how to create habits that support immunity and vitality. The course examines Ayurvedic practices like Transcendental Meditation, exercise, and mealtimes, which promote balance and well-being. Throughout the course, students reflect on their own habits and adjust them to support an optimal state of health. By the end of the course, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of Maharishi AyurVeda’s approach to nature’s cycles and how to apply these principles to create habits for wellness. (4 credits)
This is the second course of the two-course series of Human Anatomy and Physiology. The focus will be on the endocrine system and divisions of the nervous system, and how they control other organ systems of the body and maintain homeostasis. Topics include: respiratory system, endocrine system, reproductive system, nervous system, and excretory system. Relevant current scientific research results are discussed, as appropriate. Students will get an opportunity to explore how human physiology is a replica of natural law as expressed in the ancient Vedic Literature discovered by Tony Nader, MD, PhD. (4 credits)

Natasha Durand

natasha durand

Hello! I am Natasha Durand, the Director of the Online BA in Ayurveda Wellness & Integrative Health. With my background in program development, leadership, and Ayurvedic wellness education, I am devoted to contributing to organizations that prioritize holistic health and innovative approaches to well-being, which is why I chose MIU for my education and later, my career. My expertise lies in academic leadership, curriculum design, and community engagement, allowing me to drive forward the mission of consciousness-based education with both proficiency and passion. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Physiology and Health, building upon my foundational knowledge gained from an MS in Maharishi AyurVeda & Integrative Medicine from MIU, and a BS in Psychology from the University of Vermont.

My career journey has encompassed many diverse roles which all have helped me develop my leadership and organizational skills. My path stated in the United States Air Force where I honed my leadership and technical skills, earning recognition for outstanding performance and contributions to mission success. There, I found I had a passion for working with people. I volunteered my time as the “Booster Club” President where I worked to maintain the wellbeing and morale of soldiers and their families through times of high deployments. To better serve the people around me, I became certified as a Sexual Assault Victim’s Advocate and Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention counselor. This later led me to serve as a Suicide Prevention and Crisis Intervention Counselor at the Vermont National Guard, providing crucial support on the suicide hotline and ensuring the safety and well-being of soldiers, veterans, and their families. I wanted to be able to do more for those in need and this drove me to pursue higher education which is what brought me to MIU.

Upon graduating from the MS in Maharishi Ayurveda and Integrative Health program, I was hired as a developer and instructor of the Life and Wellness Coaching Track at the same institution, I crafted and delivered a comprehensive curriculum focusing on holistic development, empowering students with practical skills in wellness coaching. Later, I was promoted to Assistant Program Director and then Program Director of the BA Ayurvedic Wellness and Integrative Health Program. Here I have had the honor to pick up the torch of fostering an inclusive educational environment that highlights the unique qualities of each of our students.

My experience also extends to managing successful annual conventions at SC Horror Convention. Alongside my husband, we work to bring a family friendly and inclusive weekend full of fun. Working alongside local artists, vendors, businesses, and nonprofit/charity organizations such as the Trevor Project, we have helped to gather a community of people who all share a love of pop culture and all things spooky. We also use this platform to promote anti-bullying and consent messages to help make our community, and the wider world, a better and safer place.

On my “days off”, I like to spend time with my husband, children, pets, and plants in my garden.

FAQ

If you have passed college-level Anatomy & Physiology courses within the past 5 years with a grade B- or higher, then you can have them waived.
You can choose Ayurveda Wellness & Integrative Health as a specialization in any bachelor’s degree program. You can also choose to major in this subject with the BA in Ayurveda Wellness & Integrative Health.
You should plan to spend 12-14 hours per week for a 4-credit eight-week course. If you are taking 2 courses during an eight-week period, you should plan to spend 24-28 hours per week reading, creating assignments and discussion forum posts, and studying course materials. The time it takes to complete an online course successfully depends on your willingness to stick to a regular schedule and learn to study effectively, more than on any other factor.
We accomplish this by using an online learning platform that students find highly engaging. The program also features an extensive collaboration between students and one-on-one interaction between our faculty and each student
An undergraduate major is a primary field of study during your undergraduate years. This major defines the actual degree and specifies core courses, electives, and the foundational knowledge that you will acquire. An academic specialization is a more concentrated area of courses which you can choose in addition (32 additional credits) to your major field, which may be in the same disciplinary area or something different.
